Plot summary
Jeff Callum, a novelist, and his wife Frankie run The Swan, the inn on the island of Fara. They moved there so that Jeff could get away from Angela Roberts, a younger woman he had an affair with, though Frankie believes the mainland had simply grown tedious. Jeff hires a secretary, and Angela is the one who arrives, intending to cause trouble in the marriage. At the same time the island is gripped by an inexplicable heat wave in the middle of winter, with the temperature climbing so high that cars stall, beer bottles shatter, television sets explode and the telephones stop working. Godfrey Hanson, a scientist from the mainland, rents a room at the inn and spends his time exploring Fara with motion-sensitive cameras and soil samples, which the locals find suspicious.

- The 1959 novel had already been adapted for British television by ITV in 1960, and the film was intended to reuse that script with some embellishing. When it required several changes, writers Pip and Jane Baker were hired to work on it.
- The pub around which the action takes place was shot at The Swan Inn in Milton Keynes Village, which is surrounded by housing rather than the fields seen in the film. The opening shots of the island's meteorological station are of the transmitter station at Portland Bill, Dorset.
