Plot summary
A coup in an unnamed African state overthrows the post-colonial government. Troops supporting the new regime seize Batasi, a King's African Rifles base, take its weapons, and arrest Captain Abraham, the newly appointed African commanding officer. The British non-commissioned officers, led by Regimental Sgt. Major Lauderdale, are isolated in their mess. With them are the wounded Captain Abraham, the British Labour MP Miss Barker-Wise, and Karen Eriksson, a secretary with the United Nations. The NCOs must protect those in their care against the troops now controlling the base. The base is remote, and the British NCOs are veterans of colonial service.

- Britt Ekland was originally cast as Karen Eriksson but left Guns at Batasi three weeks into production after her new husband Peter Sellers, paranoid about an affair with co-star John Leyton, had the actor friends David Lodge and Graham Stark spy on her; she has said he told her to claim illness so she could not return.
- Britt Ekland's role was recast and completed by Mia Farrow, and 20th Century Fox sued Ekland for $1.5 million while Peter Sellers counter-sued for $4 million, claiming the studio's suit caused him "mental distress and injury to his health".
