Plot summary
In Websterbridge, New Hampshire, Richard "Dick" Dudgeon is an outcast from his family, an apostate they want nothing to do with. British soldiers in nearby Springtown hang his father as a rebel and leave the body on the gallows. Dick takes the body down and has it buried in the parish graveyard, then returns home for the reading of his father's will, which leaves him the estate. His mother deplores him and refuses to stay with him, and Dick declares himself a rebel, calling his family cowards for appeasing the British. The minister Anthony Anderson warns that the British may arrest Dick and hides him at his own house. Called away to Dick's sick mother, Anderson leaves him with his wife Judith. Soldiers arrive and take Dick away in the minister's place.
