Plot summary
Jennifer Baylor comes from a poor Pentecostal family in Appalachia and has a supernatural ability to control and communicate with snakes. She and her father, Luke, left home in disgrace after snakes she was handling killed the preacher's son when she was seven, and she has refused to handle them since. Luke is obsessed with the Bible and mentally disabled; he keeps a pet store in a Los Angeles suburb and urges her to use her gift again. At the elite Green View School, Jennifer studies on a scholarship as an outcast among wealthy classmates. Her only friends are lunch lady Martha and teacher Jeff Reed. Jennifer exposes Sandra Tremayne for stealing exam answers, and Sandra escapes punishment when her senator father donates to the school. Sandra then subjects Jennifer to pranks and harassment meant to drive her out.
