Plot summary
Gloria Benson is shot dead at home, and District Attorney Victor Scott prosecutes her lover, Edward Clary, for the murder. Scott, who rose from the slums, has a spectacular courtroom style and needs to win every case; the case is also a step toward the governor's office he wants. Ellen Miles works at his side, less relentless than her boss but devoted to him, and Ray Borden is their colleague. Ellen's father, a judge, helped Scott's career; after his death Scott helped Ellen finish law school and brought her into his office. Scott encourages Ellen to marry Borden. The jury finds Clary guilty.
