Plot summary
Nelle, the wife of Johnny's business partner Guido Marchettis, has never gotten over her feelings for Johnny, once her boyfriend. She has an expensive pocket watch made for him, matching the one she gave Guido, with a romantic inscription on the back. Johnny refuses it and hands the watch and a note to Harriet Hobson, who checks hats at the casino, so she can pass them back to Nelle. Harriet is found dead. Her sister Nancy comes looking for the reason, and Johnny, who resists at first, is drawn to her. Inspector Koch handles the case, while Chuck Blayden, a crooked policeman, presses Guido to give him Johnny's position at the casino.

- Dick Powell acted with Jeff Chandler on radio and was impressed enough to take him to Columbia, telling executives the young actor ought to be in pictures; Chandler recalled that one executive gave in and cast him as a gambler in a card-playing sequence in Johnny O'Clock.
- Columbia bought the rights and first tried to assign the project to director Charles Vidor, who refused; his refusal later came up when Vidor sued Columbia.
- Johnny O'Clock was the directorial debut of Robert Rossen, the writer who went on to make All the King's Men and The Hustler.
