Plot summary

Halley Martin is seventeen and convinced that real love does not exist. Her parents, Len and Lydia, are divorced. Len hosts a radio talk show and dates a young woman the family cannot stand, and Lydia lives alone. Her sister Ashley is so taken up with her coming wedding to Lewis Warsher that she is barely present at home. At school, the other teenagers strike Halley as shallow. Her best friend Scarlett Smith begins a summer romance with Michael Sherwood, the school soccer champion, and Halley warns her about where it could lead. Halley also runs into Macon Forrester, Michael's best friend, a slacker who skips biology.
