Plot summary
Three or four years after a nuclear war that took two minutes and twenty-eight seconds, London's survivors wander through the rubble. Lord Fortnum asks Captain Bules Martin for a malnourishment prescription; he also fears he is turning into a bed sitting room. Martin confirms the change, so Fortnum seeks a second opinion from an overwhelmed male nurse with the National Health Service. Penelope lives with her parents on a still-working Circle line tube train. Her parents discover her with her fiancé Alan, and he joins the family; she is pregnant. They leave the train to find a nurse, carrying a trunk that unknowingly holds a living man who has waited three years to be collected as dead. Two policemen hover above the survivors in a makeshift balloon car and shout at them to keep moving.

- Richard Lester had planned his next film after Petulia to be Up Against It, written by playwright Joe Orton, but Orton was murdered shortly before production; Lester then offered The Bed Sitting Room to United Artists as a replacement.
- The Bed Sitting Room was the last film released by United Artists' foreign film arm Lopert Pictures Corporation, which folded in 1970.
