Plot summary
Marianne Danielle is a student teacher traveling to a post in Transylvania. Her coach leaves a village inn without her, and the inn has no room for the night, until the Baroness von Meinster offers her a bed at her castle. There Marianne notices a young man on the balcony below her own and learns from the baroness that he is her son, the Baron, kept out of sight by an illness. Visiting his room, she finds him fastened by the ankle and hears him say his mother has taken his lands. He asks her to set him free, and she takes the key from the baroness's desk. Doctor Van Helsing, meanwhile, travels toward the village, where the local priest has asked for him.
