Philip Stone
Biography
Philip Stone was an English actor who began his professional theater career in London in 1947, worked in repertory, and by 1960 had settled in London as a regular television presence, often cast as tough-minded authority figures. He appeared in series such as The Avengers, The Saint, Coronation Street, Justice, Bergerac, Yes Minister, Heartbeat and A Touch of Frost, and was known for the roles of Detective Sergeant Sowman in Coronation Street and Sir John Gallagher in Justice. Among actors, he was unique in appearing in three Kubrick films in a row: A Clockwork Orange (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975) and The Shining (1980). His other films included Where Eagles Dare (1968), Flash Gordon (1980) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), and he voiced Théoden in the animated The Lord of the Rings (1978). His last film role was in The Baby of Mâcon (1993).
