Plot summary
In the woods outside a Welsh suburb, a man kills a woman with an axe and drops the body and the weapon into a lake. The police find a headless body and an axe in water at the edge of the property of Mrs. Bramson, a wealthy widow. Danny, a hotel bellboy, has been summoned to her house, where the maid, Dora, is pregnant by him. He charms Mrs. Bramson and is soon living there, pretending to be her son, repainting a room and taking on butler duties, and he courts Olivia, Mrs. Bramson's daughter. Questioned about the dead woman, he says she was a prostitute who came to the hotel.
