Michael Shanks
Biography
Michael Shanks is a Canadian actor who is best known for playing the archaeologist Daniel Jackson in the science fiction series Stargate SG-1. Born in Vancouver and raised in Kamloops, he studied fine arts at the University of British Columbia until 1994 and served a two-year apprenticeship at the Stratford Festival in Ontario. Guest spots on shows such as Highlander and The Commish led to television movies and then to his breakthrough on Stargate SG-1, where he played Daniel Jackson for the show's first five seasons, departed, and later returned. He won a 2004 Leo Award for the episode Lifeboat, and a 2009 Leo Award for the direct-to-DVD film Stargate: Continuum (2008). He also appeared in the companion film Stargate: The Ark of Truth, released the same year. His other credits include Sumuru, Arctic Blast (2010), Faces in the Crowd (2011), guest roles on 24 and Smallville, and the series Saving Hope as Dr. Charles Harris.

Shanks left Stargate SG-1 after its fifth season over creative differences about his character's under-use and the show's direction, then returned for the seventh season and later won a 2004 Leo Award for the episode "Lifeboat".

Shanks watched Richard Dean Anderson get ready for a MacGyver scene, which made him want to pursue acting more. He chose the fine arts program at the University of British Columbia, staying until 1994.
