Plot summary
By 2154, Earth is a polluted, crowded ruin, and the wealthy have moved to Elysium, an orbiting station where Med-Bays cure any illness. Max is a parolee in Los Angeles who assembles the robots that police the planet for Armadyne Corp. When a jammed door traps him in a radiation chamber, he absorbs a fatal dose and is told he has five days left. A Med-Bay on Elysium could save him, but Delacourt, Elysium's defense secretary, keeps illegal flights from Earth out of the station. Max turns to Spider, a hacker who smuggles passengers upward, and offers to work for him in exchange for passage.

- The main role was first offered to South African rapper Watkin Tudor Jones, a District 9 fan with a D9 tattoo on his inner lip, who turned it down, then to Eminem, who wanted the film shot in Detroit; that was not an option for the studios, so Blomkamp moved on to Matt Damon.
- In 2013, writer Steve Wilson Briggs sued the producers for copyright infringement, claiming he had written a screenplay substantially similar to the film and had registered it with the U.S. Copyright Office beforehand; the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ruled in favor of the film's producers in October 2014.
- The film's Earth-bound scenes were shot in a rubbish dump in the poor Iztapalapa district on the outskirts of Mexico City, while the wealthy world of Elysium was filmed in Vancouver and in the affluent Huixquilucan-Interlomas suburbs of the same city.
