Plot summary
In 1971, after a 25-year career with the Detroit Red Wings, Gordie Howe steps away from the ice holding records for scoring and games played and moves into a front-office job with limited say. Two years on, his sons Mark and Marty, skating for the Toronto Marlboros in junior hockey, are too young for the NHL, and Colleen, Gordie's wife, sees an opening in the new World Hockey Association. At the WHA's first amateur draft, Houston Aeros coach Bill Dineen picks Mark first overall and takes Marty as well. Detroit owner Bruce Norris offers Gordie a larger role with the Red Wings if he voids his sons' WHA deals, warning of an NHL future closed to them. Colleen acts as agent for all three, and Gordie considers returning at 44, training hard for a place in the lineup.

- Playing hockey in period gear hurt. Andrew Herr found the 1970s long-bladed tube skates especially punishing, and his co-star Kathleen Robertson said the actor's feet were left "bloody [and] ripped apart" by them.
- The rink sequences were shot overnight in twelve-hour blocks under production consultant Billy Keane, and the action had to be rehearsed and then played at reduced speed so the camera could follow it. Every extra on skates was a professional from the American Hockey League.
