Richard Dean Anderson
Biography
Richard Dean Anderson is an American actor who started in television in 1976 on the soap opera General Hospital and later became the lead of the hit series MacGyver, which ran from 1985 to 1992. He produced two follow-up television films to that series, MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis (1994) and MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday (1994), and appeared in Through the Eyes of a Killer (1992). In 1997 he took the role of Jack O'Neill in Stargate SG-1, a continuation of the 1994 film Stargate, playing the lead until 2005 and returning in a recurring capacity through 2007. He reprised the character in the spinoffs Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, and he starred in the series Legend and had a recurring role on Fairly Legal. He served as an executive producer on several shows in which he acted, including Stargate SG-1. The Air Force Association honored his work on Stargate SG-1, and he became an honorary Air Force brigadier general.

First role
The Marine Reserve Public Affairs Unit produced a 1975 short film, The Birthday Party, to mark the 200th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps founding, and it gave Anderson his first screen role.
Getting ready for a role
Anderson was drawn to MacGyver because he liked the idea of a TV hero who avoided guns, which set the character apart from other action heroes of the time.
Big break
Anderson took the lead in Stargate SG-1 after MGM president John Symes called him personally, and he signed on after repeatedly watching the original Stargate film.

Anderson was made an honorary Air Force brigadier general in 2004, after General John P. Jumper presented him an award for his role in Stargate SG-1.
