Plot summary
Bill Porter was born with cerebral palsy, and as an adult he seeks work only to be turned away again and again. His mother Irene urges him to keep hoping, and he applies at Watkins for a door-to-door route selling household goods and baking products. The company brushes him off at first, until Bill offers to take the least profitable territory and to be paid on commissions alone. His first days bring slammed doors and customers who are uneasy around him. Irene writes patience and persistence in ketchup on either side of a sandwich, and Bill sets about sharpening his sales pitch. A lonely widow named Gladys becomes his first sale.
