Biography

Michael Greyeyes is Plains Cree from the Muskeg Lake First Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada. He is an actor, choreographer and director, who first began his career with the National Ballet of Canada. Recent works include Passchendaele (feature film), The Threshing Floor (a dance work he co-choreographed with Santee Smith), Triptych (a short film broadcast nationally on Bravo!), and The Journey (Pimooteewin), a new opera work he directed with music by Melissa Hui and libretto by Tomson Highway.

Early training
Greyeyes graduated from The National Ballet School in 1984. He then served as an apprentice with The National Ballet of Canada and in 1987 became a member of its Corps de Ballet.
First role
Greyeyes started acting in 1993, when TNT's Geronimo cast him as Juh. That part brought him many television appearances, among them guest roles on Walker, Texas Ranger and Millennium.
Behind the camera
Greyeyes started Signal Theatre in 2010; the company looks at live performance that crosses cultures and disciplines. He has been its artistic director and choreographer, guiding three main works, among them From thine eyes, Nôhkom and A Soldier's Tale.
A change of course
In 1990, after three years, Greyeyes relocated to New York City and became part of modern dance choreographer Eliot Feld's company. He appeared in several of Feld's seminal works, among them Intermezzo, Skara Brae and The Jig is Up.
Behind the camera
Greyeyes directed the opera The Journey (Pimooteewin), which features music by Melissa Hui and a libretto written by Tomson Highway.
Early training
After years of acting as well, Greyeyes earned a master's degree in Fine Arts from Kent State University's School of Theatre and Dance, finishing in May 2003.
