Plot summary
In 1981, on the Red Crow reserve in Quebec, fisherman Gisigu cleans salmon that keep moving after he has gutted them. Sheriff Traylor, his son, shoots a dying dog that belongs to his ex-wife Joss, a nurse. Traylor learns their son Joseph is jailed in Hollarbaster on a vandalism charge with his half-brother Lysol. The dead dog comes back to life in his police car's trunk, and Traylor shoots it again. Gisigu and Traylor burn the dog and the fish. Outside the reserve the dead are rising, while its Indigenous residents are immune.

- Blood Quantum is deliberately set in 1981, the same year as the Listuguj raids, when game wardens, fisheries officers and Quebec Provincial Police officers raided the Listuguj reserve, arresting and beating many members and confiscating their fishing equipment. Members who avoided arrest erected barricades and a second raid followed in retaliation.
- Before starting production, writer-director Jeff Barnaby had every actor in the cast watch Incident at Restigouche, Alanis Obomsawin's influential 1984 documentary about the Listuguj raids.
- The film's title comes from real blood quantum laws, which the United States and Canada have used to decide indigeneity by the percentage of a person's indigenous ancestry.
- Blood Quantum collected more nominations than any other film at the 9th Canadian Screen Awards, ten of them, and ended up winning seven.
