Plot summary
Jesse Graves is a smokejumper in northern Wyoming. While he and his mentor Wynt Perkins battle a forest fire, they pull a girl from a burning cabin; Wynt is badly hurt and has to leave active duty. Months later, convicted killer Shaye breaks out of prison with five other inmates after an arsonist sets a forest fire so the prisoners can escape while assigned to fire crews. Four years earlier, Shaye stole thirty-seven million dollars and hid it in the forest. Now he and his men pose as Canadian firefighters and take bird watcher Jennifer hostage on their way to recover the money. Jesse must stop the convicts and get Jennifer out alive.

- Savoy Pictures offered Sylvester Stallone $20 million to star in Firestorm, and he accepted the offer, but the studio went bust before the film was made.
- Firestorm's screenplay was written on spec by Chris Soth as his thesis for the MFA screenwriting program at USC, and the now-defunct Savoy Pictures bought it planning a more epic-scale film with extensive visual and computer effects.
- Graham Yost did an uncredited production polish on Firestorm's script, which was also rewritten by four other writers on the way to production.
