Plot summary
The fishing village on a small island has cut itself off, and Grace and Bobby are raising Isla, a girl whose healing powers the residents depend on. Ten years ago Grace loses a baby in a storm, and the next morning her husband Bobby and Beau, the community doctor, pull an infant girl out of the sea; a wound Bobby receives heals while he holds her. Grace's mother Faye has recovered from dementia, teaches school, and leads ritual visitations in which Isla's healing influence is at work, and she frames the community as a chosen folk. Villagers often part with the words many thanks to Isla.
