Plot summary
Silas Crow lives on the Kidabanesee reserve in Northern Ontario, unsure whether to take an automobile mechanic's course. He wears an old fedora and a long trench coat. His best friend is Frank Fencepost, and Sadie Maracle is his girlfriend. To get a job he wants, Silas must write a personal essay. He tells the story of a young girl from the reserve who was murdered by a drunken white man. When the killer receives a light sentence, the community feels shock and anger, and its members struggle with the lack of justice. Illianna is Silas's sister, and Gooch, her ex-boyfriend, returns home from prison.
