Plot summary
In Wisconsin in 1988, Makwa Gi-Zheg is an Ojibwe boy abused by his father at home and bullied at school, and his cousin Teddo is the one friend he has. Teddo teaches him to fire a rifle, and in the woods Makwa shoots a classmate, James, then asks Teddo to help him hide the body. By 2019 Makwa has become a California businessman known as Michael Peterson, married to Greta and father to an infant son. Teddo has finished a ten-year sentence for dealing drugs and stays with his sister Cammy, who is raising a young son of her own. Cammy tells him that Makwa left the reservation and has not come back, not even for family funerals.
