Plot summary
Charlie McGee's parents took part in a clinical trial of an experimental chemical, Lot-6: Andy came away able to put a thought in another person's head, Vicky able to move objects with her mind. Their daughter Charlie can set things alight, and Andy has taught her to smother the flare, which anger or pain sets off. As she turns 11, the fire grows harder to control. She explodes a bathroom stall at school in anger at being bullied, and the incident reveals the family's location. Captain Jane Hollister, who leads the Department of Scientific Intelligence, monitors the thermal signatures Charlie leaves behind, and Dr. Joseph Wanless, creator of Lot-6, urges her to stop the girl before her power becomes uncontrollable.
