Plot summary
In 1913 Nome, Alaska, Leonhard Seppala and his wife Constance take in a newborn Siberian Husky. Seppala judges the puppy too small and weak to work and wants him retired, but the dog refuses to stay in the kennel, slips loose whenever the team trains, and crashes through a window pane to rejoin the sled dogs. Seppala finally lets him run, finds he can outlast every other dog and lead the team, names him Togo, and trains him to win the All Alaska Sweepstakes. Twelve years later, diphtheria breaks out in Nome, mostly among children. With flying the antitoxin in from Nenana impossible in the weather, town officials decide only Seppala can make the 600-mile run. Constance fears the trip will kill the old dog; Seppala takes Togo anyway.

- The main dog playing Togo is Diesel, a Canadian Kennel Club registered Siberian Husky from Newfoundland who is a direct descendant of the real Togo going back 14 generations. Two Snowy Owl kennel dogs from Canmore, Hugo and Mackey, were used throughout the film as stunt doubles for Togo's face.
- The film shows Togo living out his days with Leonhard Seppala, but in real life the dog was given to fellow musher Elizabeth Ricker in Poland, Maine, to live out his golden years and sire pups.
- The film never shows Leonhard Seppala's reaction to Balto getting credit for the serum run, only Constance's annoyance, but in real life Seppala openly voiced his disapproval of the dog hero mix-up.
