August Schellenberg
Biography
August Schellenberg was a Canadian actor who studied acting at the National Theatre School of Canada between 1963 and 1966. He was born in Montreal and later settled in Toronto, where he was based until 1995. His first screen part came in 1971 with Rip-Off, a coming-of-age movie directed by Don Shebib, and in 1981 he supplied voices for the animated Heavy Metal. He played Randolph Johnson across the first three Free Willy movies (1993 to 1997), and he had major roles in Black Robe (1991), Iron Will (1994), True Heart (1999), DreamKeeper (2003), The New World (2005), Eight Below (2006), and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007). The last of those earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination. He won a Gemini Award in 1986 and a Genie Award in 1991 for Black Robe. In 2012 he led an all-Aboriginal staging of King Lear in Ottawa for the National Arts Centre. He died in 2013.
