Plot summary
African American farmers settled in rural Canada in 1875, in the years after the Civil War. Two hundred years later, their descendants still work a farm of 40 acres, and Hailey Freeman is the matriarch holding the family together. The world around them is post-apocalyptic, decimated by famine, and food is scarce. Hailey and her family tend the soil and keep up what earlier generations built. A militia has set its sights on those 40 acres and means to take the homestead from them. The Freemans have no intention of handing over the land their people have held for two centuries.
