Plot summary
Catherine Weldon, recently widowed, paints portraits in New York. She writes to Sitting Bull at Fort Yates, North Dakota, asking to paint him, but Indian Agent James McLaughlin destroys her letter and orders her arrest on arrival. Traveling west alone, she is warned by Army Colonel Groves to go home. She reaches the reservation anyway, and Sitting Bull agrees to sit for her for a fee of one thousand dollars. That night a warrior bursts into her cabin, pressing Sitting Bull to declare where he stands. Groves warns Catherine not to raise the Indians' hopes, telling her a treaty will soon take more of the reservation land and that General Crook and the 7th Cavalry have not forgotten their battles.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The portrayal of Catherine Weldon is inaccurate down to her name: born Susanna Karolina Faesch, she actually went by Caroline Weldon. She arrived at Standing Rock late in her life, with her son, having wished primarily to help the Indians in their social struggle, and the fact that she painted Sitting Bull several times was incidental.
SPOILER
In truth, Sitting Bull refused to go quietly when the police arrived. There was a struggle between Sitting Bull's followers and the policemen, which resulted in a total of thirteen people being killed, including Sitting Bull.
