Plot summary
The doll that Lisa brings from Montreal to New York is packed with heroin, and when a watching man unsettles her at the airport she hands it to a fellow traveler, the photographer Sam Hendrix, meaning to collect it later. Harry Roat brings two small-time con men, Mike Talman and Carlino, into his hunt for the doll. The doll is somewhere in the Greenwich Village apartment Sam shares with his wife, Susy, recently blinded in a fire. Roat arranges for Sam to be called away, then the three men work their way into Susy's day: one claims to be an old friend of her husband, another a police detective, a third an old man with a story about a missing woman. Susy has no idea where the doll is.

- Cinemas were asked to join in the suspense of the blackout climax by dimming the house lights and then switching them off one by one, down to the lowest level the law allowed.
- Henry Mancini built the score around two pianos deliberately tuned a quarter-tone apart, so the out-of-tune instrument's notes clash with the other and give the music its unsettling edge.
