Plot summary
Dean Miller, a reporter for a television station in a European city, arrives at the airport to interview a scientist about a nuclear accident. Before the interview, an unmarked military transport makes an emergency landing on the runway, and armed, deformed men burst from the plane and attack the soldiers waiting outside, stopping to drink blood from the wounded. Miller escapes and heads for his newsroom to tell the public what he saw, but General Murchison of Civil Defense has closed the station and confined the crew inside. As the attackers spread through the city and their ranks grow, Miller sets out to find Anna, his wife, a doctor at the local hospital.

- Nightmare City has been called a precursor of the fast zombie trend by publications including Slate and Yahoo, and Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez acknowledged it as a major influence on Planet Terror.
- Umberto Lenzi wanted Franco Nero, John Saxon or Tomas Milian for the lead, but Hugo Stiglitz, a regular of Lotus' Mexican ventures, was hired against the director's will to meet the demands of the transatlantic partners. Lenzi also disliked Laura Trotter but was overruled by the Italian producer.
- The budget was so low that only a parked airplane could be obtained, so the C-130 landing at Zaragoza Air Base was cobbled together from footage of three real scheduled flights the crew waited to arrive.
