Plot summary
During a ride to the Assiniboin camp, Winnetou drives off a bear attacking Ribanna, the chief's daughter, and her grateful father frees three soldiers held at torture stakes, among them Lieutenant Robert Merril, whose father commands Fort Niobrara. Merril is to carry Winnetou's word that the tribes seek a peace council at the fort. Bud Forrester and his gang raid a Ponca village because oil lies under it, and his men chase the three soldiers until Old Shatterhand and Gunstick intervene. Winnetou and Ribanna grow close in the Assiniboin camp. Old Shatterhand takes Lord Castlepool to New Venango, Forrester's headquarters, where the two are threatened, separated from their horses and arrested.
