Plot summary
David Barrett shares a dog track with Lou Belden, who has sold his interest to gangster Frankie Edare, a man who means to take the track for himself. Barrett confronts Lou at the Intermezzo Club and warns him off. The same night, Jessica Warren, a businesswoman who has been drinking, strikes an elderly man named Ferranti with her car, drives away, and stops at a service station, where she telephones the police. Barrett, riding in a taxi, spots a car trailing him and gets out to run. At that station he finds Jessica's car, gets in and drives off. Jessica tells the police it was stolen and says nothing about the man she struck. Lou is gunned down at the club, and the newspapers name Barrett as the man sought for the killing.
