Plot summary
Katrin Holstrom leaves the family's farm to study nursing in Capitol City. Adolph Petree, a barn painter who has just finished a job for her father, offers her a ride and takes her money along the way. Unwilling to ask her family for help, she finds work as a maid in the household of Agatha Morley, a political power broker, and her son Glenn Morley, a United States Representative. Her down-to-earth sense impresses Agatha and the butler Joseph Clancy, and Glenn is taken with her as well. When the Morleys and other party leaders must fill a congressman's seat, they settle on Anders J. Finley, a choice Katrin strongly opposes. At a public meeting called to introduce him, she puts pointed questions to him.
