Jon Cryer
Biography
Jon Cryer is an American actor who came from a show business family in New York City, where he was born in 1965. He played the lead in his first film, No Small Affair (1984), and broke through as Duckie in Pretty in Pink (1986), followed by leading parts in Morgan Stewart's Coming Home (1987) and Hiding Out (1987) and roles in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987) and Hot Shots! (1991). A string of short lived sitcoms gave way to a career resurgence as Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men from 2003 to 2015, a role that brought him two Primetime Emmy Awards, in 2009 and 2012, and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2011. He went on to play Lex Luthor on Supergirl from 2019 to 2021 and starred in the sitcom Extended Family from 2023 to 2024 and the film Big Time Adolescence (2020).

Cryer's first professional acting job was replacing Matthew Broderick as David in the Broadway play Torch Song Trilogy, because he closely resembled Broderick.
A role that slipped away
In 1993, while appearing in a London play, Cryer was asked to try out for Chandler Bing on Friends. A British casting agent videotaped his reading, but the tape did not reach the U.S. before the network made its final decision.
Big break
Cryer was cast as Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men against the wishes of CBS executives, who knew of his past failed shows, and thanks to his friendship with Charlie Sheen.
