Plot summary
At Robert's thirty-fifth birthday party he fails to blow out a single candle on his cake, and the married and engaged couples around him promise that his wish will still come true. Robert is a well-liked single man in New York. Sarah and Harry trade taunts about her food and his drinking. Peter and Susan announce that they are divorcing. Jenny and David share marijuana that Robert brought and question him about why he has not married. Robert says he is not against the idea, and three women he is seeing appear to complain about his reluctance to commit. His male friends each propose a candidate, while Robert waits for someone who brings together the qualities he admires in his friends' wives.
