Plot summary
Three stockbrokers, Andrew Morenski among them, sold bogus bonds for a mobster who is headed to trial. One of them is killed at his home, and the next morning the FBI takes Andrew and a second broker into protective custody. Andrew talks his bodyguards into breakfast at a diner, where hitmen follow them, and he gets away by boarding a train. He arrives in Topsail, Delaware, and calls his Aunt Lucy, the nurse at the local high school, arranging to meet her there. He shaves his beard, bleaches the sides of his hair and trades his coat. Staff at the school take him for a new student and sign him up for classes as Maxwell Hauser, a name he gets from a coffee can. His cousin Patrick, a classmate, does not know him at first.
