Plot summary
Randall Schwab is a wealthy insurance salesman in Phoenix, Arizona, and O.C.'s grandfather is in a group home because of him. O.C. and his friend Mark Stiggs are high school students who scorn the consumer culture around them. They slack off and play pranks on the Schwab household. O.C. faces a move out of state with relatives at the end of the summer. The two tell the story of that summer to Omar Bongo, the president of Gabon.

- Mike Nichols was the first director considered and wanted Eddie Murphy for one of the two leads, but his commitments on Broadway and abroad kept him from making the film.
- Robert Altman banned the film's writers from the set and berated producer Peter Newman for speaking to a studio executive, whom Altman described as "the enemy".
- The shoot was a wild affair: Altman chose a hotel with an open bar because it was near a racetrack for gambling, and watching dailies went hand-in-hand with pot-smoking and cocaine use.
- The comic characters D.R. and Quinch, created by Alan Moore, are a science fiction take on the O.C. and Stiggs characters.
