Joan Allen
Biography
Joan Allen is an American actress who came up through the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, joining its ensemble in 1977, and went on to work on both stage and screen. Born in Rochelle, Illinois, she won a Drama Desk Award for And a Nightingale Sang and a Tony Award for her Broadway debut in Burn This. She made her film debut in Compromising Positions (1985) and drew international notice in the mid-1990s for Nixon (1995) and The Crucible (1996), both earning her Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress, followed by a Best Actress nomination for The Contender (2000). Her other films include Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993), The Ice Storm (1997), Face/Off (1997), Pleasantville (1998), The Notebook (2004), The Upside of Anger (2005), and the Bourne films from 2004 to 2012. She won a Canadian Screen Award for Room (2015), and her Broadway work also includes The Heidi Chronicles, Impressionism, and The Waverly Gallery.
