Plot summary
The four Wolfmeyer daughters, Hadley, Emily, Andy and Popeye, live in a Detroit suburb with their mother Terry, whose husband Grey has gone to Sweden with his secretary. Terry drinks heavily and often erupts in anger, and the girls mostly take her side against the father who left. Each of the daughters is working through troubles of her own. Next door lives Denny Davies, a retired baseball player who sells autographed baseballs and hosts a radio talk show where he refuses to discuss baseball. Denny and Terry grow closer. Her daughters lean on Denny too, and Terry starts to have doubts about where it is going.

- Mike Binder wrote the role of Terry Wolfmeyer specifically for Joan Allen, having befriended her after working with her on The Contender. The script was then rejected by several major studios because of Allen's casting, so Binder and his producer brother Jack Binder sought independent financing and renegotiated compensation deals with the talent to get the film made.
- The Upside of Anger was only given the green-light by studios once Kevin Costner was cast, according to writer-director Mike Binder.
- Kevin Costner's character, Denny Davies, is believed to be based on Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain: like McLain, Davies is a retired Tigers player who later hosted a radio talk show. Stills of Costner from his 1999 film For Love of the Game, in which he played a Tigers pitcher named Billy Chapel, hang as posters in Davies' radio studio.
