Plot summary
Reverend Smith arrives from Boston to serve as the new pastor of Starkfield, a stark village, and he sees that Ethan Frome keeps apart from the people around him. Smith takes an interest in Ethan and urges his parish to be charitable. Ethan, a distant cousin of Zeena Pierce, married her, and the two live together on an isolated hardscrabble farm. Zeena is debilitated and constantly ill, so the household needs an extra pair of hands. Mattie Silver, a beautiful and spirited young woman, joins them to help around the house. Mattie and Ethan fall in love, and Zeena is unhappy about it.
