Plot summary

Arvilla Holden is on vacation in Borneo with her husband Joe when he dies. She has his remains cremated and takes them back to Pocatello, Idaho, where the couple lived, intending to scatter the ashes as he asked. Joe's daughter from an earlier marriage, Francine, insists they belong in the family crypt in California, and claims that the house Arvilla lives in passed to Francine under Joe's original will. Francine says she will put it up for sale unless Arvilla goes along. Arvilla gives in and agrees to attend the memorial service, inviting her two closest friends to travel with her: Margene, a former teacher who was dismissed from her job after recommending birth control to students, and Carol, a married Mormon. The women leave in Arvilla's restored 1966 Pontiac Bonneville convertible.
