Plot summary
The summer of 1974 finds the Groden family living off the grid in rural New Mexico, where Bo, who is eleven, fills her days with the world she builds in her head. Her mother Arlene keeps the household running. Her father, Charley, has withdrawn into a deep depression. That summer an auditor named William Gibbs comes to the property. He works for the Internal Revenue Service and wants to know why the Grodens have gone so many years without filing tax returns; their ability to get by on almost nothing strikes him as suspicious. He stays on the land while he looks into the matter.
