Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Notebook (2004)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Early on, George Clooney was set to play the young Noah opposite Paul Newman as the older Noah, until Clooney watched several of Newman's old films and told him directly that he did not think he looked like him.
- A nationwide search for Allie considered actresses including Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, Claire Danes and Reese Witherspoon, and it eventually came down to a final choice between Britney Spears and Rachel McAdams, with McAdams getting the part.
- The rundown house Noah restores was actually a private residence that was not dilapidated at all; special effects were used to make it look decayed, and despite what the film's dialogue implies, the house and the Seabrook area had no real connection to Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, whose actual plantation was elsewhere near Charleston.
- Director Nick Cassavetes deliberately wanted an unknown, "not handsome" actor for Noah and picked Ryan Gosling for the part, after Hayden Christensen had originally been considered for the role.
- To get into character as Noah, Ryan Gosling relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, for two months before filming, spending his time rowing the Ashley River and building furniture by hand.
