Plot summary
Samantha Hughes is seventeen and has just left high school in Kentucky, where she shares a house with her uncle Emmett Smith. Emmett served in Vietnam and has post-traumatic stress disorder. He spends his days with Tom, Pete and Earl, fellow veterans whose own war experiences still trouble them. Samantha's father, Dwayne, died in Vietnam after he had married her mother, Irene, and Samantha never met him. Sorting through old belongings, she finds photographs, medals and letters that were his, and she sets out to learn what his life had been. Irene, now remarried, wants her daughter to move in with her and start college, but Samantha stays with Emmett, whose circle will not talk about the war.
