Plot summary
Joy Newsome, twenty-four, has been held for seven years in a shed in Akron, Ohio, by a man her son knows as Old Nick, who abducted her. Jack, five, was born in that shed, which the two of them call Room; it holds a bed, a bathtub, a toilet, a television, a rudimentary kitchen and a single skylight. Jack has never been outside. Joy, who is malnourished and depressed, has told him that nothing beyond Room is real and that television shows him a world that does not exist. Old Nick brings them food and other supplies, and he tells Joy he has lost his job, so the deliveries may stop.

- Director Lenny Abrahamson read Emma Donoghue's novel and sent her a 10-page fan letter saying it should be a film, not knowing she had already written a screenplay. Donoghue felt the letter showed he understood her work and pushed for him to direct.
- Emma Watson, Rooney Mara, Shailene Woodley and Mia Wasikowska were considered for the role of Joy before Brie Larson was cast. An associate of Abrahamson suggested he watch Larson's performance in Short Term 12 (2013).
- Emma Donoghue wrote the screenplay for Room before her novel was published in 2010, then turned down many filmmakers' offers for the book for creative reasons.
- Because Abrahamson and cinematographer Danny Cohen wanted every shot taken from inside Room, the lens stayed within the set even when the rest of the camera was outside, with as many as eight cameramen crowded in at once.
- Production designer Ethan Tobman made every piece of the 11 ft Room set, built on a soundstage at Pinewood Toronto Studios, removable so the crew and equipment could fit inside the cramped space.
- For the role of Joy, Brie Larson consulted a trauma expert and a nutritionist, went on a restrictive diet and avoided sunlight.
- Canadian actor Tom McCamus first auditioned for the part of Old Nick in Room before he was cast as Leo instead.
