First role
In This Is England, a coming-of-age drama, O'Connell landed his first film part. Filmmaker Shane Meadows judged him too old at 15 for the lead, so he created the supporting role of the belligerent Pukey just for him.
Early training
O'Connell became interested in acting through compulsory drama classes. Starting at 13, he went to Nottingham's free Television Workshop, training there in drama twice a week.
Behind the award
For Starred Up and Unbroken, O'Connell earned the Breakthrough Award from the National Board of Review. He was also the tenth person to receive the BAFTA Rising Star Award, which is publicly voted.
