Plot summary
Matt Busby hands a debut to the young striker Bobby Charlton in the autumn of 1956, and he joins a Manchester United side nicknamed the Busby Babes because almost every player came up through the club. Mark Jones, Duncan Edwards, Eddie Colman and David Pegg are among the younger members of the squad, while goalkeeper Harry Gregg arrives as a rare signing from outside. Busby wins the agreement of the league administrator Alan Hardaker for the team to enter the European Cup, provided they return in time for domestic fixtures. Assistant manager Jimmy Murphy works with the players as they win at home and in Europe. Their flight home from a European Cup tie in Belgrade comes down in Munich after a refueling stop.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about United (2011)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Centre-half Mark Jones was portrayed as United's captain in the film, when in real life the captain was Roger Byrne, who also died in the disaster and was not credited in the film; just six of the seventeen players involved in the crash were credited.
- Sandy Busby, the son of Matt Busby, thought the film was "very poorly done" and was disappointed that the Busby family had not been contacted about it; he was "disgusted" with the portrayal of his father and critical of the omission of some players.
- The shoot took four six-day weeks of filming and was hindered by heavy snowfall in December; one extra day cost the production £30,000 because the project was not insured against inclement weather conditions.
- Brunton Park in Carlisle doubled for the inside of Old Trafford, and Žalgiris Stadium in Vilnius, Lithuania stood in for the Stadium JNA of the 1950s.
- Dougray Scott said of the crash sequence, "We filmed the scene on a military base up in Newcastle. There were some people sitting in seats without a scratch on them, dead, others without a scratch on them alive, some with terrible injuries and dead. It was an emotional part of the shoot."
- The score, composed by Clint Mansell, was released on iTunes in April 2011, and it is Mansell's first TV film credit.
