Plot summary
Connie Reid marries Sir Clifford Chatterley and moves from London to his estate in Wragby. Her sister Hilda disapproves, but Connie says she loves Clifford for being progressive. They consummate the marriage, and Clifford leaves the next day to fight in World War I. Weeks later he returns paralyzed from the waist down and impotent. He insists Connie alone help him with daily living and rejects her attempts at other sexual pleasure. Caregiving and lack of intimacy wear on her. Clifford becomes controlling, focused on power and wealth, and tries to keep her from leaving. He wants an heir and suggests she have an affair to become pregnant. When Hilda sees Connie's exhaustion, she hires Mrs Bolton as Clifford's caretaker. Sent to check pheasant chicks at a nearby cottage, Connie meets Oliver Mellors, a reserved gamekeeper whose wife left him.
