Plot summary
Louie Zamperini grows up in Torrance, California, where other children taunt him for being Italian. His older brother Pete trains him to run, and he becomes a disciplined distance runner who finishes eighth in the 5,000 meters at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and sets a record on the final lap. During World War II he serves as a bombardier in the Army Air Forces. In April 1943 he flies a bombing mission against Japanese installations on Nauru, where enemy fire damages his B-24 and the pilot, Phil, brings the bomber down at the airfield. On a later search-and-rescue flight the plane's engines fail and it goes down in the ocean, leaving Louie, Phil and Mac adrift on rafts, rationing food and water and watching for sharks.

- Before Unbroken opened, Japanese nationalists asked for the film and director Angelina Jolie to be banned from their country over Laura Hillenbrand's account of Imperial Japanese Army atrocities against POWs, and a Change.org petition for a ban drew more than 10,000 signatures.
- The Dutch Indonesian group The Indo Project began a Change.org petition in support of the film, seeing it as a reflection of what their family members in the former Dutch East Indies experienced in Japanese camps; author Adriaan van Dis, Doe Maar frontman Ernst Jansz and actress Wieteke van Dort signed it.
- A Japanese-language Change.org petition for the film's release in Japan drew more than 1,200 signatures, and Unbroken finally opened there on February 6, 2016 through independent distributor Bitters End, on a much smaller scale than planned, after Toho-Towa, Universal's usual distributor there, passed on it.
