Plot summary
In 1971, the British Army sends Gary Hook, a new recruit, to Belfast with his platoon under the inexperienced Second Lieutenant Armitage, after he takes leave of his younger brother Darren. Deployed without riot gear to a neighborhood shared by Catholic Nationalists and Protestant Loyalists, the soldiers back the Royal Ulster Constabulary as it searches homes for firearms, and Hook is shaken by the rough handling of the civilians. A crowd gathers to protest the searches, and the troops are told to hold the crowd back without lethal force. The protest turns violent, a boy runs off with a dropped rifle, and Hook and Thompson give chase.
