Ian Ogilvy
Biography
Ian Ogilvy is an English actor, playwright and novelist who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and is best known for playing Simon Templar in the television series Return of the Saint, a part he took over from Roger Moore. In the early 1980s he was considered a leading contender to take over as James Bond, though he never played the role. His films include The Sorcerers (1967) with Boris Karloff, Witchfinder General (1968) with Vincent Price, Waterloo (1970), Death Becomes Her (1992) with Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn, and My Life in Ruins (2009). He starred in all three films made by the filmmaker Michael Reeves and has acted widely in West End and American theater. He is also the author of novels, plays and children's books.

A role that slipped away
In the early 1980s, when Moore said he intended to leave the role, Ogilvy was seen as a leading contender for James Bond. He never played the part, partly because Moore reconsidered his resignation several times.
Beyond film
In the early 1980s, Ogilvy recorded readings of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. The Listen for Pleasure label put these readings out on audio cassette.
Behind the camera
Ogilvy is a playwright and novelist who has written a series of children's books about Measle, including Measle and the Wrathmonk, Measle and the Dragodon and Measle and the Mallockee. At least 15 languages now have versions of the books.
